A: People sometimes ask if they can buy one of our String Deadeners, sometimes called a String Mute.

You don’t need to buy one from us, because you can make your own string deadener easy as pie.

Just go down to Ace Hardware, in the kitchen department, and look for ‘shelf liner’. It’s a spongy material, usually comes in black and ‘almond’ and sometimes colors like purple.

I learned about this material from Mark Warr at Warr Guitars. In southern California, they actually use the same material in building foundations, because it’s very, very good at absorbing vibrations. However, since it’s also very good at keeping plates from sliding around on a shelf, the hardware stores carry it in the kitchen section.

$4 should buy you enough to treat all the guitars in Minneapolis, Santa Fe, Cleveland, or any other city of your choice.

In the past, people have used all kinds of material for deadening the ringing strings, including leather, felt, velcro material, and fuzzy-dice material. This ‘shelf liner/earthquake stopper’ material works the best.

AND HOW TO APPLY THE MATERIAL

Cut a strip about three times as long as the neck of your instrument. (Easiest way is simply to cut a strip all the way across the 1-foot width of the roll of spongy stuff.

Cut this strip wide enough to fit between the nut and first fret. Or if you have a ‘zero fret’ design, like the Mobius Megatar instruments, between the zero fret and the first fret.

Leave about 1/4″ space near the first fret so you can play at that fret. Run the strip beneath *all* the strings, and then come back weaving over and under. Presto! Megatar string dampener.

PS: WHAT IS A STRING DEADENER?

For anyone perplexed by this subject, here’s the deal:

On a two-handed tapping instrument, when you’re touching the string to the fret to make it sound, then your amp is turned up so you can hear this note, and sooner or later you have to take your finger *off* the fret. On a regular guitar, when you do that, the open string is then going to ring. This particular note may or may not be in your current key, but the odds of this being a good note … are remote.

However, if you weave some spongy stuff between the strings, down by the nut, then when you take your finger off that string, the string quickly goes quiet, which is what you want.

Thus the humble string deadener, originally invented by Dave Bunker in the 1950s, as a part of one of his early patented instruments. It was later used by Emmett Chapman on his Chapman Stick instruments, and after a number of experiments, Mr. Chapman seems to have favored the use of Velcro.

But try the shelf liner stuff. It works better than Velcro.

A: Someday, tapping instruments will be found in any music store. (If in fact, in that future, music stores still exist.)

But that day is still some years in the future. And in some ways this works to your advantage.

For example, one of the reasons our pricing is (relatively) low for a specialty instrument is that we sell direct.

We did experiment slightly with selling through dealers, but it became obvious that we’d have to raise all prices quite a lot and we didn’t want to do that. (There is one manufacturer who does sell through dealers; and you’ll notice how their prices are considerably higher than ours.)

And so this is one reason that we don’t have any music store dealers. Not even in Los Angeles or Noo Yawk; not nowhere.

We do realize it’s a bit of a ‘leap of faith’ to order an instrument without playing it first.

Because, usually, when we want to buy a guitar, we trot down to Guitar Center and try some off the wall.

But a touch-style instrument is a different kind of beast. You won’t normally find them in a music store, because …

The instruments don’t fit on the racks on the wall;

The salesmen don’t know what it is;

The younger customers all want to try it, but then hang it horizontal trying to pick it and don’t know why their hand won’t reach all the strings in that position;

Then it gets banged up;

And after failing to sell it for a few months, naturally the music store wants to return the banged up instrument. Bummer.

So this doesn’t actually work well, quite apart from the 40% markup that they want to charge.

I (Traktor) remember the first time I took that leap of faith. It worked out for me, and it works out for most folks.

However, since we cannot offer you the opportunity to visit our instrument at the music store, this is why we have our “Universal Guarantee of Satisfaction.”

It says: “If less than completely delighted with any standard instrument purchased from our factory, return it within one week in new condition for full refund of your purchase price.”

Now please realize that when you try a guitar off the wall at Guitar Center, it becomes immediately clear that you either like it or you don’t. And if you’re not quite sure, then you go back the next day to check. And that’s really all it takes to know.

So since you can test the instrument on your own gear in your own home for up to seven days, this is plenty of time to make sure it’s going to be fun and productive.

A: It depends on what pickup array you’ve installed and other options.

Generally, around 9 pounds. If you’re a medium to large man, our standard MegStrap should make the weight ride comfortably on your shoulder. However, if you are smaller of stature or have had any back problems or if the weight annoys you during the gig, try the alternate support methods.

For example, the folks over at Slider Strap have provided us with some of their patented ‘two-shoulder’ straps onto which we’ve grafted our shoulder pad and attachment to hold the bass upright. While it takes a moment longer to put it on or take it off, it spreads the weight out most wonderfully!

You can also reduce the weight by connecting the removable belthook so that your pants belt bears some of the weight. And if you can sit down during the gig, use the MegBar and the instrument’s weight can rest comfortably on your thighs while you play.

A: Lots of folks believe this, because Buzz Feiten’s *first* discovery had to do with moving the nut to make the open strings play more in tune with the fretted strings.

However, after that he went further, and along with super-luthier Greg Back of Southern California, they developed a whole set of adjustments you make to the bridge saddles. In effect, you are intentionally make the strings precisely ‘out of tune’ by an exact amount. What exact amount? Why the exact amount that your ears need to hear because of the way ears actually work.

It took them five years, they report, to uncover by tedious experiment, the exact formula that makes human ears hear strings as being ‘in tune.’ We shouldn’t be too hard on Feiten and Back for taking five years; after all, it took piano tuners much longer to develop the ‘stretch tunings’ that are now used on pianos worldwide.

A: Check it out with your own ears. It works. Major players all over the globe, including Stu Hamm, Liona Boyd, Robert Fripp, Larry Carlton, Jimmy Haslip, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai all have good ears. Every one of them will now play on nothing else. You’ve got ears. Give a listen to a Feiten-tuned instrument and you’ll never want to play (out of tune!) without it!

Compare the sound of one of our instruments to the sound of a normal guitar, or some tapping instrument that doesn’t have the Buzz Feiten Intonation System. The better your ears, the more dramatically you will hear the difference.

The factory can restring basses per Schell’s method, and reset the Feiten Intonation System so that you get those benefits under his tuning as well. If you’ll not be using our standard strings, we’ll need a set that you’ll be using in order to set up the Feiten system (so that it will still be set up correctly some day when you change your strings!).

A: Yes, on most instruments, we can. On standard tuning, the bass strings group is nearest your face, and in ‘uncrossed hands’ the instrument is restrung so that the harmony strings group is closest to your face and bass strings group furthest. The benefit is that your left hand on the left side of the fretboard can go all the way up and down the bass strings on the left side of the instrument without running into your right hand.

It can slightly change the sounds coming out of the pickups because pickups are not spaced identically on the ‘bass’ and the ‘melody’ side, but this shouldn’t be much of an issue.

A: It’s easier than it looks. Did you ever hear about the guy who, seeing a piano for the first time, said, “Man! How can you ever mash all those notes at once?”

It’s the same idea. You don’t play them all at once. In fact, we start out just playing three strings just above fret two. If you play guitar or bass, your left hand already knows how to fret these notes, and you don’t need to pick or strum, so you just touch the string to the fret and it plays. Now here’s where you get lucky …

All of your ‘left hand learning’ was really just training your head, and your right hand is wired into the same head. What that means is that whatever your left hand knows, your right hand almost knows already. You’ll discover that your right hand can very quickly be playing like your left hand.

If you’ll start out with our standard ‘BassBottom’ tuning, you’ll notice that the left-hand set of strings are tuned exactly like a standard six-string bass. And the notes on the right-hand set of strings just above fret twelve are *identical* to the left-hand notes just above fret two. This means that you can play both hands identically; in fact you can train them simultaneously.

This method of play is somewhat easier to learn than guitar because the straight fourths tuning makes unnecessary learning additional scales and chords to deal with the ‘B’ string like on guitar. And it’s a little easier than piano because piano requires you to operate your left hand and right hand differently to move up a scale. In this method of play, you operate both hands exactly identically. The BassBottom tuning gives you the only two-handed instrument in the world which lets you play two-handed and operate both hands identically.

Pick up a free preview copy of our method book in the ‘Documents‘ section of this website — or subscribe to our free newsletter and we’ll send you the complete book as a bonus — and you’ll see how surprisingly easy it can be. The book is written so you can try it on any six-to-eight string instrument, and it even works with the unusual ‘Inverted Fifths’ bass-strings tuning.
