  • Factory Custom Mod -- Edge-Dot Markers
The proper playing position for a touch-style instrument is a 'near vertical' orientation. As you play, the tuner machines should be above your left shoulder, and to the left of your head. (Our MegStrap holds the instrument in the correct, upright position whether you are playing standing up, sitting down, or leaping around the stage.)

When you put the instrument on your body in the correct position, you should place your thumbs behind the fretboard *gently* away from your chest, so you are now looking at the *back* of the fretboard. In this position, your left and right wrists are nearly straight, and the benefits of this hand position are: (a) in this position, the edge of the instrument nestles against the *rear* of your palm, near your thumb, and this permits your fingers to reach completely beyond the far edge of the fretboard, and so all notes are easily accessible, and also because (b) this nearly-straight wrist is far better for your long-term wrist health than a cramped and bend-wrist position.

Since you're now looking at the back of the fretboard, you cannot watch your fingers. This is good, because as you play you will need to read charts and notes, look at the other musicians, and flirt with folks in the audience. Further, you can avoid the bent-over body posture which is more tiring on the gig, and which shows the top of your head to the audience.

It's a fact that you can play faster and more accurately by *touch* than by using your eyes. (Though when you first begin, playing only by touch goes against your instinct.) As you play, if you are (correctly) playing with your finger-flats *on* the fret, then you will have constant tactile feedback as to your position.

But now and then, you may wish to have a quick glance to relocate your hands.

In that case, our factory-installed Edge Dots become very useful!

Because you can see the Edge-Dots from the *rear* of the instrument, as they are installed on the edge nearest your face. The Edge-Dots exactly duplicate the dots and double-dots on the fretboard, and so you can see the entire location system from the rear of the fretboard as you play.

To make the Edge-Dots stand out, they are built using material contrasting with the wood. For example, on dark instruments, the Edge-Dots will be white (as are the dot-markers on the fretboard). And on light-wood instruments, the Edge-Dots will be black (just like the dot-markers on light-wood instruments).

Click on this link to see additional (and larger) Photos of black and white Edge Dots.

Custom Edge-Dots can most easily be installed on new instruments ordered direct from the factory, but in most cases, Edge-Dots can be retro-installed on existing instruments as well.
