How to choose the best model? Simple. Let your Tuning choose your Instrument ...
Do you play in the INVERTED-FIFTHS tuning that is popular with Chapman Stick players? If this is your preferred tuning then specify the MaxTapper HAMMER OF THOR, whose parallel frets can give you the tuning you already know, and whose dark premium woods provide a warmer, more 'round,' and a somewhat 'darker' tone. Mahogany or sapele neck-through construction, and rich rosewood or wenge fretboard that feels great to the fingers.
But if you play in the fast-learning BASSBOTTOM tuning, or if you are an existing guitar player or bass player, then stay with the strings in fourths that you already know (to maximize your speed of learning and power). But consider the patented Ralph Novak 'Fanned Frets' System, and specify the ToneWeaver HAMMER OF THOR. The frets may look odd because they are arranged on a slant upon the fretboard. (Oddly, they don't feel very different to the fingers.)
This makes the bass strings longer from end to end, compared to other instruments. And on the ToneWeaver, the melody strings are shorter end to end. The reason for doing it this way is simply that LONG bass strings sound better, and SHORT melody (guitar) strings sound better. That's why basses are usually long, and guitars are usually short.
Now, using fanned-frets, for the first time on a touch-style instrument, we can improve tone -- it adds depth and penetration to the bass, and clarity to the melody -- and this tone improvement is made possible by our licensing of Novak's patent.
- MaxTapper HAMMER OF THOR with parallel frets has one Bartolini pickup for bass and another Bartolini for melody. Dual active-circuit Bartolini preamps drive *all* the sound to your amp over custom cables (provided). Graph Tech custom nut and saddles of exotic 'StringSaver' material extend sustain and enrich the sound. At the flip of a switch, change to GraphTech “Screaming Ghost” piezo ‘acoustiphonic’ sound, for unmatched crystal-clear melody and crisp and growling bass tones. ‘Mini-Mixer’ blend feature and much more included.
