"A Deaf and Blind Man is Crossing the Busy Highway. Gosh! Almost as Frightening as a Non-Reading Musician trying to Fake It with the Pros in the Band ..."
"Ouch! .. for God's Sake, Don't Be Like Jake!"

From the Desk of Traktor Topaz,
near Mount Shasta California,
Dear Two-Handed Tapper,
Jake?
Who's Jake?
Well, Jake, as some of you may know, is a pretty good tapper, well, kind of a good tapper. Do any of you have a teenage nephew who toys with the guitar, and has learned three and a half licks?
Jake was one of those guys, but he got a tapper, and he worked his way up to almost twenty licks.
As long as it was a kind of a blues song, he could play those licks. He played them good.
And along the way, he became a really good rhythm player. (He could only solo sometimes ... because he only knew twenty licks.)
And for ballads, he followed the chord chart, and worked up some great tumbling arpeggios, and bits of tricky funky stuff. In short he sounded pretty good. But he never learned to read.
"Naw," he'd say, "I tried, man. It's too tough."
I might have argued with him, a little.
Told him to use the method we gave him, for free when he got his Megatar. Told him to simply follow Books One and Two and then get a bunch of old copies of sheet music magazine -- that's what I did -- and play all the melodies in C, and then go on to the key of F, and so forth.
Because that's the secret. To simply break it down to simple steps. Then it's simple to do.
"Naw," he said, "I tried, man. It's too tough."
It's no use arguing with Jake.
AND THEN, AT THE AUDITION ...
Perhaps it was a few months back, and Jake was ready to make his move. There was a slot open in a touring band; he knew most of the guys. He'd jammed with one of them.
He figured he was a shoo-in. (That is Texas talk for a sure thing.) He felt confident going to the audition.
His new buddies reassured him. The audition was mostly a formality. There were several guys that wanted the slot. Politics, you see. Got to have an audition.
So he felt good, and at the audition, they played a simple blues for starters, and gave him the nod to take a solo. So he trotted out those licks, and he sounded really hot.
"Say, that's pretty good," the head guy said. "Let's try this ballad, and you do the verse, OK?"
And he popped a leadsheet in front of Jake.
Uh-oh.
Jake didn't get the gig.
DON'T BE LIKE JAKE
Learning to read is *NOT* too much trouble.
Done right, it's easy. It's fun.
You make rapid progress given only slight but regular practice. And then you won't be an illiterate musician any more.
A world of new songs opens up. New thoughts, new melodies, new ways of thinking.
It's the pro way to go.
Period.
THE EASY TOUCH-STYLE METHOD BOOKS
Book One is the simple basics. You can learn them in a week or two, but they provide the foundation for everything to follow. We sell this book on EBay, and you can get a copy free with a subscription to our free newsletter.
Book Two expands these basics, showing how to play bass hooks, walking bass, and rhythm patterns at the same time, plus how to read rhythm patterns in standard music notation.
Book Three expands these basics to show how to play melodies, learning to read them easily, and how to play left hand chords.
(Book Four, yet to come, shows how to use the basics you already know to improvise over any set of chords.)
I'm assuming you already have Book One with the basics. (If not, just sign up to get it here.)
And now, you can also Book Three, without paying even a penny ...
WHAT YOU'LL GET IN BOOK THREE
- A Simple Strategy for Reading Easily
On a guitar, there are many places you can play the note called 'Middle C'. It can be confusing. But with one simple idea, we eliminate all confusion. Using this one simple idea ... there is only one way any note can be played.
- Mapping the Fretboard
Expanding from the Nine Holy Notes (which you know very well from Book One and Book Two) to all the notes across all six strings ... is really easy. One simple pattern. Nothing to it.
- Mapping the Melody Staff
On each string there are three notes. We'll use just four strings, and we'll cover all the notes on the Melody Staff. It's simple when we simply go string by string. No big deal. Who knew it could be this easy?
- Playing Melodies
One string at a time. That's the key to easy, fast learning. We'll introduce three notes, and then there's a simple exercise to play those three notes. Then ... next string. Then two strings. See how it goes? And oddly enough, you discover that the simple exercises you were playing ... have turned into a song you know, and now you know how to read and play it.
NOW WE BEGIN TO PLAY!
Easy First Step - Playing Melodies with Chord Roots. This sounds great, and couldn't be easier. You already know the bass roots, and so now we can show you how to look at a song, and analyze it, to see the sequence of notes and where they go, like first and second endings made simple.
And you'll be led easily through three songs. And then we'll use another song to begin to investigate a few lower notes and higher notes. Step by step it's easy!
MYSTERIES UNLOCKED. PUZZLES MADE SIMPLE
-
Unlocking the Keys
If you have the Hal Leonard 'Real Book' #1 or #2, then here you'll first find a list of songs, all in the key of C that you can use to expand your reading easily and quickly. And then ... we're ready to explore how a song can be in a different 'key'.
-
This is explained very simply, and then, using the songs you already know, the songs are presented again, twice. Once with one flat added. Easy. Again with one sharp added. Also easy. Whoah! You're reading in keys!
Using this same system, the small set of six songs you know are then rotated through the common sharp keys and common flat keys. When you approach it broken down like this, it's just one simple step after another. Reading can be easy!
Then, if you have the Hal Leonard 'Real Book' #1 or #2, you'll find a list of about 30 songs in each book ... that you can play ... now!
-
The Universal Melody Pattern
Now that you can read and play, a bit more understanding of how scales cause the sharp or flat notes to appear. With a map of your fretboard, you can easily begin to clearly see exactly *why* there is one sharp in the key of G.
When you see the pattern, it's clear why there's one sharp in key of G ... because it *has* to be! You will also begin to see how the sharps and flats *have* to appear in the order that they do, as you begin playing the different keys.
Then we'll build, string by string, a map of how any scale will have to manifest upon the melody strings. And you will see revealed that all scales are actually just one simple pattern, endlessly repeated.
Scales become ... clear.
-
Many Keys, One Doorway
Now we'll apply this 'Universal Melody Pattern' to the specific notes you know on your tapping instrument, and you can begin to clearly see how the sharps and flats are manifesting as you change the keys.
Everything you've previously learned is now coming together into one integrated whole that includes the 'notation' (written notes on the melody staff), the shape of the 'universal melody pattern', and the notes you've learned on the fretboard of your tapping instrument.
- Magic Three to See the Key
A simple-as-pie little exercise you can do at the beginning of any song, takes 20 seconds, so you can clearly visualize where all the scale notes (with sharps and flats) will be, in any key.
NOW, EXPANDING THE BASS BECOMES EASY ...
- Extending the Roots
Previously we've dealt with bass roots inside the Nine Holy Notes, which are arranged on three strings. Now it will be helpful to extend this pattern slightly, and show the bass roots on two strings. Because of what you already know, this is actually pretty simple.
- Left-Hand Chords
And now that we've slightly reordered the bass roots along two strings, it becomes pretty easy to base upon these roots our new, easy-to-play left-hand chords. There are initially only five shapes you need to know. That's it. Only five shapes, and you can play nearly every chord you will ever see in a song.
Now, just for completeness, all the other chords that appear now and then are also provided in this chapter, and in the appendix, but 96% of what you play will just be those five simple forms.
- Arpeggiation
Now that you can read and play melodies, and now that you can play left-hand chords behind those melodies, we'll deal with different ways to play those left-hand chords, to give interest, variety, and different rhythms to your music. The first and most basic (and often the easiest) is simply arpeggiating the chord notes, playing them one after another, and we'll discuss different rhythmic ways to do that.
- Comping
Short for 'accompanying' this means playing the chord tones as a block, which gives a solid and strong rhythm to any song.
- Root-Chord Pulses
Luckily, you can also break apart the root from the harmony notes in all of these chords, and this means we can play 'pulses' of the root and harmony notes. Four variations are shown, and then how to turn these into lots, lots more.
- More Left-Hand Bass Patterns
Looking back to Book Two, this is a good time to remember the left-hand bass patterns revealed there, and we revisit the 'Seven Basic Rhythms'. Suddenly, underneath your melodies, these sound really good!|
AT LAST! THE EIGHT-FOLDING PATH!
At last! We have reached the destination of the entire 'Bookmark' system is in view.
The Eight-Folding Path is a set of eight steps, for example, playing the melody in both hands, which is now something you can do easily. Another example, playing left hand roots and right hand guide-tone chords (from book one) in a rhythmic manner. And what we learned in this book, playing melodies over bass roots or over left-hand chords.
We are lacking only one step: improvisation. (That comes in Book Four.)
By running through the Eight-Folding Path, you can quickly 'work up' any song, in any key, with what you already know. You can now play this song in seven different ways. And soon, in eight different ways.
It's both a fun and brilliant exercise ... and it's music, pure and simple.
- Plus the Appendix, where you'll find a concise and up-to-date Bookmark System Summary, the Folk Cycle, the Blues Cycle, the Jazz Cycle, the 'Popcorn' Cycle, The Seven Patterns of Rhythm Bass, Walking Bass Guidelines, the Diatonic Chords within a Key Structure, the three Chord Qualities, all the Chords for bass in fourths or fifths, the complete set of melody notes and how they map to from melody staff to fretboard, left-hand chords in fourths and fifths, and something really cool ... the "Hidden Fifth Descent" Big Jazz Pattern. Plus Magic Three to See the Key, and the Eight-Folding Path. It's the entire world of the Bookmark system: Bass, Melody, Harmony, Chords and easy-to-understand theory, all in 50 pages.
