A STARTLING PHONE CALL
I guess it started that late afternoon in 1996, when I got the phone call. The guy's accent so thick you could cut it with a knife. And I almost hung up on him. Because he said something that really creeped me out ...

Although I was startled, I thought for a moment, and suddenly realized that what he'd really said in his thick accent was, "We can bring happiness to so many guys." Whew! And I'd almost hung up right there!.
The deal was that, on his way to Singapore, Henri was passing through San Francisco, and he'd heard of me through a mailing list of two-handed tapping musicians. My girlfriend and I were just heading out to dinner. I asked him to meet us, and I'm glad he did, for it changed my life forever.
A STRANGE IDEA
Over dinner and wine, he again brought up this idea, "Why don't we make a new tapping instrument?"
Now this was odd, because someone else had asked me the very same question a week earlier, and just recently I'd met a world-class guitar-builder at his shop in Sausalito, and learned he could make a prototype, if I could give him the spec.
But for now, skipping over the instrument, which did blossom into existance, with many features of improvement over older designs, it seemed to me that the real issue was ... we would need a new learning method. It made no sense to try selling an instrument without a how-to-play-it book, and the only book I knew was for a strange tuning different than the new instrument we were discussing.
Now, I'm the first to admit I'm not a great musician, although I completely fell in love with the two-handed tapping method. However, Henri was quite accomplished, though eccentric and something of a recluse, I came to find out.
But ... as it happens ... my one great skill in this world is to deconstruct and analyse systems, and figure out how to learn it efficiently, and I find it easy to teach anything I know. And, driven by my intense desire to play and improve, I had been learning to play with two-handed tapping.
But the methods I found in books, to learn how to improvise ... they simply sucked.
And then Henri said, "But you already have the learning method."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
A SUDDEN TURN OF EVENTS
He asked me a couple of questions from our dinner-time talk. I still didn't get it. So back we went to my apartment and broke out the tapping instruments. "My friend," he said, "Look. Here ... and here ... and here."
In the space of five minutes, he had completely transformed my understanding of creating music.
Sure, I had worked out most of the basics, and his vision was actually very similar, but pure, clean, and uncluttered. We began scribbling notes on paper. It was very exciting.
And in a half hour of frenzied notes, bits of scales, chord shapes, and trying to understand each other, I knew.
It was a completely new way to learn two-handed tapping, all the way from super-simple basics, through basslines, rhythm guitar patterns, learning bass rhythms, including an easy way to read music, playing melodies and harmonies, and an easy way to improvise.

I've never seen Henri DuPont, face to face, since that night.
